Samsung's A-series has been steadily closing the gap with their flagship phones, and the A56 5G is the strongest argument yet for spending $400 instead of $1,000. It runs the same One UI software, gets the same security updates (now promised for 6 years), and handles everyday tasks — social media, messaging, photos, video calls — without noticeable lag. The camera and display are where the compromises live, and they're smaller than you'd expect.

Where It Performs Like a Flagship

The 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display runs at 120Hz and gets bright enough to read outdoors. Colors are vivid (typical Samsung tuning), and the resolution is sharp at FHD+. The Google Pixel 8a ($500) has a better camera in low light. The Samsung Galaxy S25 FE (when available) will sit between the A56 and S25 in both price and capability. If camera quality in all conditions is your priority, save for a flagship. For everything else, the A56 handles it.
