Apple Watch SE (2nd Gen), GPS 40mm

by Apple Model Watch SE 2nd generation

4.5/5
Exceptional · Our score

The same speed and the same safety features as the flagship for far less money. You give up the always-on screen, ECG and blood oxygen.

Overall rating 4.5/5
Best for iPhone owners who want the safety features without flagship money
Key highlight Crash detection, fall detection and Emergency SOS included

Apple sells three watches and most people buy the wrong one. The SE has the same everyday speed as the expensive model, the same safety features that actually matter, and a price that leaves room for a decent band and a case.

What you keep

Fall detection, crash detection and Emergency SOS: the three features that justify a smartwatch to a sceptical relative. High and low heart rate notifications and irregular rhythm alerts are all here too. So is the full watchOS experience — calls, texts, Siri, music, Apple Pay, workout tracking — running on the same chip generation as the flagship, so nothing feels slow.

Water resistance is 50 metres, which covers swimming. Workout tracking covers the sports most people actually do, with GPS on board so a run does not need the phone.

What you give up

No always-on display, which is the difference you notice first. You raise your wrist to see the time, and in a meeting or at a dinner table that gesture is obvious. Some people adapt in a day; some never stop being annoyed by it.

No ECG app, no blood oxygen sensor, no skin temperature sensing, no depth gauge. If you have a specific reason to want ECG, that is a genuine reason to spend more. For general fitness and sleep tracking, the SE's sensor set is sufficient.

The case is aluminium only, the screen is smaller than the current flagship's, and there is no fast charging worth the name.

Battery

About eighteen hours, which means charging every night. That is the Apple Watch bargain and it has not changed. If you want sleep tracking you have to find another window to charge — most people do it while showering or at a desk. Anyone coming from a Garmin or a Fitbit will find this the hardest adjustment.

Compatibility

iPhone only, and it needs an iPhone Xs or later running a current iOS. There is no Android path and there never will be. Factor in that the watch is effectively locked to your phone choice for its life.

Should you buy it?

Buy the SE if you carry an iPhone and want the safety features, notifications and fitness tracking without paying flagship money. Skip it if you need ECG or blood oxygen, if an always-on display matters to you, or if you want a watch that lasts a week between charges.
