It is easy to be cynical about a water cup that became a collectable. Set the hype aside and there is a well-made piece of vacuum-insulated steel underneath, with two design decisions that explain why this one and not the dozen that look like it.

The two decisions

The first is the shape: a wide body that tapers to a narrow base, so it holds forty ounces but still drops into a standard car cup holder. Most big tumblers do one or the other. The second is the handle. A forty-ounce cup full of ice and water is heavy, and a handle turns it from something you carry carefully in two fingers into something you pick up without thinking.

Insulation

Stanley quotes cold water for nine hours and ice retained for forty. The ice figure is the honest one to judge it by, and in normal indoor use it holds up — ice made in the evening is still there in the morning. It is double-wall vacuum insulated stainless steel, 90 per cent recycled and BPA free.

The FlowState lid

A rotating cover with three positions: a straw opening with a seal that holds the reusable straw, a drink opening for sipping without the straw, and a full cover. That third position is described as leak resistant, and the word to notice is resistant. Tip this over in a bag and it will leak, because the straw hole and the lid seal are not a screw-down gasket. Treat it as a desk and car cup, not a backpack cup.

Everyday use

The straw is reusable and replaceable. The lid comes apart for washing, which matters because the seal is exactly where things grow if you only rinse it. Stanley says the cup is dishwasher safe; the general advice for any vacuum flask is to wash the body by hand if you want the exterior finish to last.

Should you buy it?

Buy it if you want a large insulated cup that lives on a desk or in a car and makes you drink more water. Skip it if you need something genuinely leakproof for a bag, or if you want something light to carry on a walk — full, this is a substantial object.
