Portable speakers come in two sizes: fits in a pocket and fits in a bag. Each has its place; pick the wrong one and either the sound falls short or the speaker stays home.
Who pocket size is for
Cycling, picnics, hotel rooms. Enough for one listener; bass disappears in a crowd. Water resistance is non-negotiable at this size.
Who mid size is for
Balconies, gardens, small gatherings. It is the first size where bass is felt. Past one kilogram, "portable" only lives on the box.
Three numbers to check
- Battery: look for the runtime measured at 50% volume.
- Protection rating: IP67 means full dust and water protection; IPX4 survives splashes only.
- Charging port: anything other than USB-C means a silent speaker the day you forget the cable.
